Why We Continue Going Back to Hawaii…A guide to the Big Island (Round 2…with a Baby)

I know what you are thinking…why are they traveling all the way to Hawaii (again) and with a toddler? We know…it sounds crazy. As we stepped off the plane in Kona, Hawaii, the warm tropical air hit us, and the sound of gentle trade winds rustling through the palm trees immediately transported us to a state of relaxation. Hawaii gets us every time…regardless of how many times we have been here.

We had been looking forward to this week-long adventure on the Big Island for months, and finally, we were here, ready to immerse ourselves in the island’s stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and luxurious amenities. With our bags packed and our spirits high, we set out to explore the best that the Big Island has to offer, from the sun-kissed beaches and crystal-clear waters to the lush rainforests and active volcanoes. Little did we know, this trip would be an unforgettable journey of discovery, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Did we mention this was George’s first Hawaii trip!

Arrival in Kona

We started our trip at the Rosewood Kona Village Resort. We spent the rest of the day lounging by the pool and enjoying the resort’s beautiful grounds after a long flight. We loved the Rosewood Kona. Nestled among 15 acres of lush tropical gardens and overlooking the sparkling Pacific Ocean, this luxurious oasis is the perfect retreat for those seeking relaxation, adventure, and unparalleled luxury.

But Rosewood Kona is more than just a beautiful resort – it’s also a haven for foodies and adventure-seekers alike. The resort’s signature restaurant, Moana, serves up creative and delicious cuisine using only the freshest local ingredients, while the resort’s activities team offers everything from snorkeling and kayaking to hiking and helicopter tours.

Throughout our stay, the staff at Rosewood Kona were warm, welcoming, and attentive, always going above and beyond to ensure that our every need was met. Whether we were lounging by the pool, exploring the surrounding countryside with their complimentary bikes, or simply enjoying a romantic dinner, we felt like we were part of a special community – one that values luxury, relaxation, and the beauty of nature.

Day 1-4: Relaxation at Rosewood Kona Village Resort

We started our days with breakfast at Moana, where we indulged in breakfast bento, SPAM French toast, and other local specialties. We then spent the mornings relaxing by the pool and beach, soaking up the sun and taking in the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. In the evenings, we enjoyed dinner at Moana, savoring the resort’s creative take on traditional Hawaiian cuisine.

A favorite thing for us to do in the morning was take family bike rides along the resort and countryside. The hotel has complimentary bikes (including baby carriers), and we really enjoyed this morning start. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Day 5-7: Check-in at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

On Monday, February 3rd, we checked out of the Rosewood Kona Village Resort and headed to the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, where we would spend the remainder of our trip. We started our day with breakfast at Ulu, the resort’s signature restaurant, and then spent the morning exploring the resort’s beautiful grounds and amenities.

All in all, I wouldn’t go back to this hotel. We loved the golf on the resort, but compared to Four Season’s Maui, it wasn’t our favorite. I felt like it wasn’t very kid friendly. It was great, but wasn’t a place I am dying to go back and stay with a family. It seems outdated and needs a refresh. This made dinner super easy after a day at the beach and pool.

If you are a golfer, this resort is perfect for you. There is a golf course on the resort and scheduling tee times is very easy and convenient. Tyler played a round of golf every morning, while George and I had breakfast and took our morning walk. He was finished by lunch and ready to enjoy the pool with us.
